Colleen McCullough Passes Away

I'm sad to read today that one of my all-time favorite authors has passed away. Her Rome series is hands-down the best historical fiction series ever (though my stand-alone favorite is Gates of Fire by Stephen Pressfield). Anyone who loves ancient Rome or simply loves good historical fiction owes it to themselves to read these.

  1. Twitter is having a field day with her Australian obituary. It begins: "Colleen McCullough, Australia's bestselling author, was a charmer. Plain of feature and certainly overweight, she was nevertheless a woman of wit and warmth."

Mentioning a woman's physical features probably isn't the first thing one should mention when memorializing their life achievements. Hmph.

  2. I just read LG's comment - dear Lord, they actually said that?

  3. Yes, that is horrible, but what can you expect from a Rupert Murdoch paper?

  4. I never read any of her books. I do remember my parents talking about the Thorn Birds. I recently started reading some books you gave good stars to on Goodreads--the Elric of Melnibone books specifically. I'd never read them so figured I'd clear Michael Moorcock off my list. They're pretty decent old school sword & sorcery.
